WHAT IS HOMECARE
Whether you’re having surgery and need help caring for yourself while you recover, or you have a chronic illness and need help caring for yourself long term, home care services is an option worth considering.
More and more, doctors are telling people who need continued care that the best place to receive that care is in the comfort of their own home.
Home care services provide you with a range of assistance. For example, home care services may include:
Companionship Services
Meal Preparation
medication reminders
light housekeeping, laundry, transportation and errands.
These services may be all you need to allow you to continue living independently in your own home.
Personal Care Services – These services are provided by a trained and certified Home Health Aide. This caregiver can assist with your personal care needs, such as;
Bathing
Dressing
Personal hygiene
Eating,
Helping you in and out of bed, lifting, transferring and ambulation.
Consider home care services if you need assistance caring for yourself because:
You’re less able to care for yourself as you get older
You have a disability
You’re recovering from an illness, surgery or a hospital stay
You’re living with a chronic illness
You’ve been diagnosed with a terminal illness
What are home care services?
Home care services help people with frailty or with acute, chronic, palliative or rehabilitative health care needs to independently live in their community and coordinate and manage an admission to facility care when living in the community is not a viable alternative.
Home care services include nursing, personal support / homemaker, therapy (including physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech language pathology, social work, nutrition / dietetics), medical supplies and equipment, and case management.
In home care, it is expected that the family and/or friends will provide care to supplement the formal service provision.
Home Care and the General Population
“Home care is where we can get the best value for money and the highest quality of care for people.” Deb Matthews, Minister of Health & Long-Term Care
84% of Ontarians agree with the provincial government promoting home care as an alternative to health care in institutions such as hospitals and long-term care facilities.
A well-resourced home care system is imperative to address the aging population in Ontario, which will mean more people with chronic conditions and fewer health care providers.
55% of Ontarians are more likely to say that they will need to rely on a public system for home or health care in their retirement years.
