Oxford County – Suspected Elder abuse and neglect support services information
As a trusted provider of home care services, we at Home Star Service want to ensure the safety and well-being of our elderly clients. It is important to address the issue of elder abuse and take appropriate actions to prevent it.
Elder abuse is defined as a single or repeated act, or lack of appropriate action, that occurs within a relationship where there is an expectation of trust. It causes harm or distress to an older person and can take various forms, including physical abuse, psychological abuse, financial abuse, and neglect.
If you are being abused or suspect someone you know is being abused, it is crucial to take action. If you are in immediate danger, call 911. For other sources of support, you can contact the South West Community Care Access Centre at 519-539-1284 or toll-free at 1-800-561-5490. They can provide a case manager to talk to you on the phone or arrange to visit your home to help you understand the situation and provide options.
If you suspect someone you know is being abused, talk to them and get their consent to call for help.
If someone is being abused in a long-term care home or retirement home, there are specific actions you can take, such as contacting the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care at 1-905-546-8375 or toll-free at 1-866-434-0144 to speak to a Compliance Officer or calling the Retirement Home Complaints Response and Information Service at 1-800-361-7254.
